What Is Professional Intervention?
If you need guidance to convince a loved one to get help, consider hiring a professional interventionist. This could be a licensed social worker, alcohol and drug counselor, or psychiatrist. Sometimes, an objective third party can put together a plan much more effectively than loved ones working alone.
Having an interventionist on your team can make your efforts much more effective. We recommend holding the intervention at a neutral location, such as a therapist’s office. Confronting your loved one on familiar ground can breed animosity.
If your loved one with a drug or alcohol use disorder has a history of mental illness, a third-party mediator can help ensure the safety of those who participate. A mediator can also help keep the tone of the meeting calm and productive.
